About Us

Our Mission

Our mission is to harness the power of art, particularly dance, to empower individuals, foster mental health awareness, and promote healing and personal growth. Through innovative programs, workshops, and performances, we create safe spaces for self-expression, resilience, and community connection. By integrating movement with mental health education, we challenge stigma, encourage open conversations, and provide accessible support systems. Through partnerships with schools, community centers, and mental health organizations, we strive to make dance and art a transformative tool for emotional well-being, social change, and long-term personal development.

Our Vision

Many young people in Kenya face significant challenges, including economic instability, lack of educational resources, and limited access to healthcare, which often lead to mental health struggles. Lost State of Mind believes that dance and art are powerful tools for transformation, helping to bridge the gap between individuals and the mental health support they need. Through creative expression, Lost State of Mind aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment that empowers individuals and promotes mental well-being

About Lost State of Mind

Founded in 2022, Lost State of Mind connects youth and marginalized communities in Kenya to transformative opportunities through art, dance, and mental health education. By using creative expression, we provide a safe space for personal growth, emotional exploration, and community connection. Our programs, such as dance therapy, mental health workshops, and artistic performances, break stigma, promote well-being, and empower individuals with tools for healing and self-discovery. Through Mind in Motion, Bars to Belonging, and Empower through Movement, we collaborate with therapists, educators, and artists to bridge the gap between mental health support and creative engagement.

How we will get there

We will impact 10,000 people by expanding our programs, hosting events, and leveraging partnerships with mental health organizations and corporate partners.

Our Focus is on the Four Primary Emotions

We emphasize the four primary emotions—anger, fear, happiness, and sadness—helping individuals recognize, express, and process them through movement. By using dance as a medium for emotional exploration, we create opportunities for healing, self-awareness, and deeper connections with oneself and others.

HAPPINESS

Happiness is a powerful emotion that enhances well-being and connection. We use dance to celebrate joy, encourage self-expression, and amplify positive emotions. Movement fosters a sense of freedom, playfulness, and community, reinforcing mental and emotional health.

SADNESS

Sadness, if suppressed, can lead to isolation and emotional burden. Dance offers a safe and therapeutic space to process grief and sorrow, providing comfort, release, and healing. Through expressive movement, individuals can connect with their emotions, find support, and transform sadness into acceptance and hope.

ANGER

Anger, when unprocessed, can lead to frustration and emotional distress. Through movement, we provide a constructive outlet for anger, allowing individuals to release tension, channel energy positively, and develop self-regulation skills. Dance helps transform anger into strength, self-awareness, and creative expression, promoting emotional balance.

FEAR

Fear often holds people back, creating anxiety and self-doubt. Through dance, we encourage individuals to confront their fears in a safe and supportive environment, fostering courage, resilience, and self-confidence. Movement allows them to explore vulnerability, regain control, and build emotional security.

Compensation

The LOST State of Mind adheres to the Fair Practice Code for the cultural sector. This means the organization is committed to providing fair compensation and equitable treatment for all employees and volunteers, as well as creating a positive and healthy work environment for everyone. Since the foundation’s activities primarily take place in Kenya, dancers, choreographers, psychologists, and support staff (marketing, administration) are paid according to the standard rates in Kenya for this type of work.

Financial Accountability

The LOST State of Mind is entirely dependent on donations, gifts, funding, and grants. The foundation’s board is responsible for managing these funds and is accountable to donors, funding organizations, and other grant providers as necessary. For activities carried out in Kenya, an annual budget is prepared. The coordinator of LOST State of Mind in Kenya submits monthly expense claims in accordance with the budget. Under the supervision of an accountant in Kenya, a final financial report is presented to the board at the end of each financial year.
